Using a road crank for single speed use doesn't make it a single speed crank.. that's the only thing bugging me with this. Otherwise it a really nice looking bike.

I love how much scrutiny the bikes receive on this site. What happened to being happy and riding bikes because they are fun as shit regardless of genre. Who gives a fuck where you ride it or how it's built as long as the rider loves it.

While I personally am critical of this fixie, it's not because of the fact that it is one, or that this guy likes riding them. I used to ride a brakeless aluminum dick-speedboat as well. Rather, I take exception with his frivolous and unsafe choice of a road crankset for fixed gear use.

Posted 4 months ago

theboss

theboss says:

You do make a good point. Your explanation is especially valid due to the fact you used the word 'dick-speedboat'. That actually made my day, hahaha. I see what you are saying, I run a brake on the bikes I run on the street. I guess I just gave up on other's when aesthetics have become worth more than safety.

That crankset doesn't make much sense to me. Why not replace it with a black Omnium?

Judging by your profile, I'm assuming you're affiliated with this "Star Track"? Seems like a strange way to promote your product by presenting this abortion of a track bike.

It's definitely a nice bike. My problems with it (which are very uptight of me) is:

The components don't match with each other except the bar/stem, and the road crankset/chainring with a track chain is very.. Off.

LOOKS nice though.

Jweeks

Jweeks says:

That crank set and chainring are 11 speed specific, running a track chain on that chainring will cause problems.

Posted 4 months ago

quixoticle

quixoticle says:

The problem lies in the chain/chainring interface. In terms of spacing, the 1/8 Izumi chain is not compatible with the 3/32 chainring on that Record 11 crankset, in sheer terms of spacing. Though it looks like the teeth have been considerably worn down on the chainring. So even while the chain might actually somewhat fit on the teeth, you are still putting stress on the links. Factor in the fact that your main mode of braking is skidding, and you have a really dangerous, irresponsible situation. The chain is liable to break at any time. This problem would not be so bad if you ran a 3/32 track-specific chain and rear cog, but you still have to deal with the fact that those cranks were not designed to handle the stresses of fixed gear use. Pedals stripping or even braking out of the crank arm is a fairly common occurrence unfortunately with the Campy carbon cranks, and this happens just with the stress of standing climbs or sprints. But of course you don't want to hear any of this, and everyone worships a cool fixie merely because it looks the part. But you cannot hide the fact that this set up is a danger to yourself and, more importantly, to others. What's so wrong with track cranks?
