I love that you were able to ditch the plastic cable guide on the seat tube. This is much nicer.

Thanks! If I'm not wrong the cable guide on the seat tube was for the front derailleur and I've ditched it so it looks pretty clean!

that derailleur and shifter are an abomination, otherwise I really like this as a 1 by.

Thanks! This was more of a budget build. The real issue with this build was the chainring. I didn't do enough research before building up this 1 by and ended up putting a normal chainring on. The bike shop that I purchased it from did not give me much advice too. I put on a chain guide later which didn't help the situaton. Right now I have a narrow wide installed and it works fine. I'm thinking of getting a clutch derailleur in the future too. An updated bike check is on the way!

narrow wide chain rings are widely available in 4 bolt patterns, unfortunately 5 bolts are usually more expensive but would be ideal if you're trying to use the original crankset, sorry your local bike shop couldn't help you much. I would suggest using a clutch derailleur except that you're approaching 10 speed territory, unfortunately I don't think that wheel is compatible with a 10 speed cassette. I suggest using the original shifter and derailleur with a bullet bros chain tensioner, its period correct, does the job and looks sweet, the tensioners are around $10-$20 on ebay. have fun whatever you decide on!

Thanks for the advice! I'm currently running Shimano Deore cranks with a 4 bolt narrow wide chainring. Initially I tried to put a 9 speed on but the stock freehub would not fit anything more than a 7 speed. The original shifter and derailleur is pretty beat up so I may not be able to use them anymore. Thanks again for your advice and ride safe!
