I just bought this frame (excellent deal) but I'm confused by it. Clearly it is a Ciocc frame (see headtube lug and BB stamp) but it has some odd features: 1. The race tag braze-on on the top tube. Could this have been used by a team? If so, approx what year? 2. It takes a 26.8 seatpost, but the frame weighs 1880grams. 26.8 suggests Columbus Alle, but the weight suggests SL or SLX. Could Ciocc have mix and matched tubes? 3. It has been resprayed and decaled. It could be made for Concorde, certainly Ciocc made frames for them. Any other way to tell? 4. The guy I bought it from said it was an Concorde Aquila that had the dropouts changed. There is perhaps evidence of this. The way the chain stay is crimped to the dropout is odd and it has bottlecage bolts. But why would someone do this? And there is no evidence of shifter or rear brake braze-ons and the seat stay bridge isn't drilled. Any help would be very welcome. Also, this is my first time posting. Thank you!!!

I would recommend joing BikeForums and asking there in the Classic and Vintage forum, someone will definitely have info. To my eyes, it looks the frameset was indeed altered at some point. The drop outs are pretty odd, don't really seem like something that would have come from the Ciocc workshop. Does it look like the brake bridge could have been replaced? Also, up until a certain point, frames didn't really have braze-ons for anything - whether shifters, FD, cables or bottle cages. And even if this frame did, those could easily have been removed. I'd agree that this is probably a frame that was converted for multi-day track events or a fixed gear trainer. Beautiful frameset though!

I have just joined BikeForum. Working up the quota of 10 posts before I can post pictures...
It doesn't seem like the brake bridge has been replaced. My issue is/was wrapping my head around this as a conversion, specifically the amount of work and expertise required to do so. Perhaps such alterations were more common than I had thought possible.
Given the odd crimping, I hope these dropouts hold up!
Thank you for the time to respond. Much appreciated.

It's actually not that difficult to modify a frameset like this, that's the great thing about steel. It looks like the seat stays were shortened a little, and the "crimping" on the chainstays is just how stay ends were often shaped when meeting the drop outs, I have had this on many frames. But yeah, 100% road frame altered with track drop outs. Now to determine its provenance!

Hey, thx for the detailed and reassuring comment re the crimping. I would love to know the provenance. Any clues to figure out if it was a Concorde? It has a 7 on the BB shell, I guess it could be an L. The guy I bought it off of claims the guy he bought it from said it was an Aquila. Which would mean Columbus SL or similar. While my frame has the weight for an SL, 1880grams, the seat tube is 26.8... odd that.
