Other variations can get close to same gearing with less weight from materials....this is about looks IMO

to be honest the 55t was on sale and i grabbed it without much thinking. but compared to the 49t chainring on my other bike i have to say that somehow the bigger chainring, with the chain having more contact points with the drivetrain just feels better.
