hey man i think im in the same boat as you... I ordered one of these bikes as a beginner a noob as you will... have you had any significant problems with it? any insight you have for me?

No serious problems yet. This is definitely a starter bike though. Bottom bracket is a little loose already, chain is kinda weak and the frame is probably more flimsy than most.
It's great for testing the waters though, I've learned a lot about cycling and it's definitely got me passionate about it. I ride everyday and feel like I got my money's worth.

I've heard so many things about these bikes, but it seems like you're enjoying it. Would you reccomend these to other people? One of my friends wants one.

You know, I think it really depends on how likely the person is to keep riding the bike. This was for me test the waters with. It's not permanent. Now that I'm sure I really do enjoy riding daily and on this type of vehicle I'll buy something better.

This is my latest pic after I upgraded the saddle and grips. The saddle is SO much better. I had no idea that a thinner saddle would make me more comfortable when properly sized. The grips are super nice BMX grips I bought at a random shop I found up north. I also got a 18t Surly cog to replace my free-wheel. Gotta stop by the LBS to get that put on though b/c I'm light on tools.

Good stuff. I like my Surly cogs I've ran on my bikes. Do you have a lockring wrench? You could do the rotafixa method of tightening the cog if you have a good way to tighten the lockring.

Actually I have NO ideas on removing the free-wheel cog. I was just going to take it down to bicycles west and have them do it and buy the tools at the same time.

Bummer. From what I could learn from my research I thought the most important feature of the drop outs was that they should be horizontal. What else should I be looking for?

I think your dropouts will do the job fine on that bike. They could be a little beefier in profile but otherwise fine. High end dropouts include stainless steel faces. Dropouts are prone to rusting because the paint will wear off from the repeated axle bolt tightening. A stainless steel dropout left unpainted and is usually polished. Pretty sexy stuff. A very small percentage of bikes have them, and the rest of us get by without rust because we sleep next to our bikes in our dry houses.
If you are still tweaking this bike, consider taking out a single link in your chain. It will tighten up your wheelbase and you have plenty of room to move that rear wheel forward.

I think it looks sweet with the mismatched tires/rims.
Are the brakes messing with the sidewall's colors?

I guess it handles pretty well. I don't have anything to compare it to though. The colors look better in person. They did get the tire colors backwards. I wanted them to match the wheels.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I changed out the saddle. The one that it came with was hurting my ass really bad. I had no idea that a properly fitted saddle could make the difference it did.
