I speak from experience when I say this but if you continue running gear ratios that high you will have no knees left.

You will become a faster rider eventually if you lower your ratio, learn to spin an develop a good pedal stroke, it will also be a lot easier on the knees.

If you can't skid stop on 53 17 something's wrong

Garuuk says:

53/17 is all right to skid on. I'm on 49/15 now and I have seen gnarly skids on 50/15 too. It's a matter of "educating" your muscles I guess.

Skidding on 53x17 is fairly easy.... I run 55x16 and it take time to get used to the ratio and also skiding with it.... Say that my ratio is too big? Well I myself can push it up hills and maintain the skids as i go. I can handle the ratio i am at... But yeas 53x17 is a fair ratio to be skidding on... n its how you feel as you ride...

Why do people use such high gear ration in Hawaii?

Posted almost 11 years ago

Nainoa

Nainoa says:

I love my current ratio. It's fast and I can skid stop quite well going at high speeds. Though if I go any higher I won't be stopping at any lights, that's for sure.

onitsukatiger

onitsukatiger says:

the kids in hawaii don't ride high ratios, their fat chainrings are useless with their larger cogs in the back. It's all relative I guess, but my 48-15 is harder than his 53-17. Not all hawaii riders do this, but a lot do. It's Tarck there, and flat. +1 zeb.

I ride 48-15 on the regular here too. Shit, I can sit skid stop going sub 22mph and that's a fact. A big chainring doesn't make you faster
