It is more likely that the owner (the next one?) had the frame repainted in EMC (because he didn't like the previous pattern)...It might as well have happened in 1994. 88/89 frames sometimes waited a long time to be sold, in the meantime a new painting pattern appeared - this may be the case here... the easiest way to check it would be to look at a piece of paper with information (always attached to the steering tube of the fork): there was always information about possible repainting and new pattern painting

S3X B3903 - Frame built in the spring of 1989 - Corsa Extra SLX; the painting pattern was introduced at the earliest at the end of 1991 (sorry, this is how it is when you write imprecisely)... It follows that the frame was painted by Merckx in 1992 at the earliest (judging by the "12 stars EU" sticker)... is the most amazing painting pattern in EMC...

so the frame was built in 89 but somehow stored in the factory to get painted in 92? that kind of history is amazing to me.
the rainbow pattern - some call it the ugliest they know, but i like it too though. cheers
