Hi All, I am just awaiting my SAB frame from Planet X and I am a little confused about what fork to buy and whether it should be threaded or threadless - can anyone explain to me which one I should buy, or is it purely down the the headset I purchase? Thanks

That's a gorgeous bike! - Recently bought the 55cm grey Sab R4.0 frame. Just getting all the components together for a winter project. For UK builders got some nice Tifosi carbon Forks from Wiggle cycles.

Just the geometry information on planet x is a bit random and they are SLOW on replying to queries!

Hello, I just ordered a 55cm grey Sab R.4.0 frame as a summer project. But I guess ill have to wait to order a fork since there are different stories about the size of the headset. Other than that im pretty excited to get going on the project.

Hello. Has anyone got a picture of the black version of this frame? I'm tempted but would like to see it before taking the plunge. PX only have images of the grey version. If no picture, is it matt/gloss black? Decal colours? Thanks!

Afternoon fellow Sab'ers. Just a follow up on my 62cm SAB R4.0. As I pointed out this takes a 1 1/8" headset, but not a standard one. I've just has a Cane Creek 40 IS41 headset fitted by my bikeshop, so hope that's of help to fellow builders - Andy

Hi! I bought one of these frames for my first build, and like some others, I'm going to use your project as a reference (and would be happy if it tuned out half as well as yours). I'm just wondering if you have any comments about the quality of your unbranded ebay seatpost, or indeed any thoughts on the vast array of unbranded carbon components available on ebay. Thanks for your time.

it's working out well so far, no complain and definitely no issues. I've not much comments though i think there are alloy seatposts which might be lighter than this one that i'm using (can't remember the weight). But i did saw off the excess length that i didn't need.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to go with carbon for comfort as the roads around here are pretty lumpy.

Hi! I have just made my mind and ordered a nashbar carbon fork too. Havent found a better choice. I received the frame today and realized that it cames without rear hanger (dropout). Did yours came without it too?

Hi - There is a post about the rear hanger further down this thread - its the HG014 type from the whooleyhatshop on ebay - cost about a tenner and fits fine

Hi! Just bought one frame size 48 color black.
I am having some dificulties to build a low cost setup due to lack of 1in steerer forks. Besides nashbar have you found any other online stores that sells that kind of forks? Thanks

PS:Is the tube steerer threaded or non threaded?

Thanks and congrats for your ride

khairi-omar says:

It can be pretty tough some how to get cheap and good 1" forks as compared to 1-1/8" ones. The ones I got from Nashbar is non-threaded. So far, the Nashbar ones are the most affordable; I saw a straight fork by origin-8 on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Origin8-Carbon-... you can try and check it out!

it's okay man, no problem. steerer length needed as in? right now I have slammed my stem with a 5mm spacer on top of the stem. Is that what you're asking?

Posted about 10 years ago

fitibomba

fitibomba says:

It's the tube length needed because of stem+headset+frame headtube .

About 8" of steerer length man

JoeH

JoeH says:

Hi - I had the same issue re poor selection of 1in forks. There is the Nashbar one, Ribble Cycles do a 1in carbon fork too for £65 I think - both of these are threadless steerer. I ended up getting a chrome steel fork from Planet X for £25 - that one is a threaded steerer. Its a bit heavy and not too good at absorbing road buzz - so I may well end up changing to a carbon fork in the future. You do need a decent length of steerer tube on your fork, as the head tube is quite long on this frame. I went for a 270mm steerer and ended up cutting it down by about 25mm.

Great looking bike and absolutely great finishing. I am just about to buy one but I am a bit confused on the sizes. Could you please tell us some details about the geometry? What size (C-C or/and C-T) is it and what is the lenght of the headtube? Can you please measure it? I believe something is going wrong on the geometry data I have found on the internet.

Breaking SAB R4.0 news. The latest batch, like mine, take a 1 1/8" headset. The head tube is different. I've been on the phone to planet x, they got one out, and it is 1 1/8, very apologetic. I've allready got the 1" fork and the orbit 1" headset arrived. Planet x agreed to let me have an orbit 1 1/8" headset for free to cover the return postage, so can't complain. Andy

No it's black, also I'm tall so it's the 62cm frame. I think maybe there are some 1" and some 1 1/8" for sale, pot luck. But as I say they treated me well, but I think they could be getting more calls from other customers.

Black? never seen that posted up on the web before. but i do remember seeing a dark blue frame which was pretty much similar to the one i have but instead of a 1" headtube, it had an integrated 1-1/8" headtube.. At least some stuffs are settled out already :) looking forward to the final build!

Hi there, I've just bought SAB R4.0 to make a flat bar commuter. I'm abit confused by the head set size, I've measured the head tube and it seems to be a standard 1 1/4" gap, does it definately take a 1" headset. Many thanks

hi - looks like we're both doing the same thing. The headset is 1in - I bought the chrome steel fork that Planet X do - just awaiting delivery of a 1 in aheadset from CRC to fit it - the plan being even tho' the fork is threaded - since I went for the extra long (270mm) fork steerer tube, there is enough of the tube unthreaded to allow me to attach a standard ahead stem (with a 1in to 1 1/8 in shim). I will update on how this works out - and also on the mech hanger if that fits ok

Hi, thanks for that. I'd allready bought some CSN carbon 1" forks, so they won't have to go back. I think i'll go for the FSA orbit-x 1" headset , looks v. nice on your set up. I picked up some veloce flat bar shifters, it's going to be an all campy set up. Many thanks for the info.

@k7k7 yup the FSA headset looks better! before this I had some cheap loose ball bearing headset, not good in terms of performance and looks at all.. After which I had a few options: FSA, CaneCreek and M:Parts

Thanks anyway - I did speak to Planet X - all they could say was that they were ordering some to be made in Taiwan and it would be a couple of months at least till they arrived. However, I think I might have found one that looks like it will fit online. BTW your finished bike does look good - I think mine will end up being more of a bits and pieces job - but since its for commuting/winter riding, thats no big deal.

Hi - I have bought one of the SAB 4.0 frames from Planet X and looking to build up into a flat bar commuter. However, my frame came without a rear mech hanger and Planet X dont have any in stock - where did you get your mech hanger from or do you know what type it is so that I can find one from an aftermarket shop - Many thanks!

Hey JoeH, for mine, it came with the frame that I ordered. I am not pretty sure which one it is exactly but i saw this on their site http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FSSABMH/sa... and there are 3 options which I have no idea fits that frame. I guess the best is to ask the PX themselves? Sorry for not being too helpful /:

khairi-omar says:

Thanks man, I'm liking your rides! TBH I've only taken them out for 1 ride, but I can say that the shifting for inner/ outer rings are much smoother. But what I've read was that these rings are stiff, light (12g lighter compared to the FSA stock 50-34), and that ceramic teflon treatment ensures longevity, less friction, etc.. So I'm buying that haha
