Pinarello Vuelta ARX 1997

This 1997 Pinarello Vuelta came into my life in 2010—or perhaps I came into its. It was virtually untouched, acquired from its original owner who had ridden it only sparingly. A rare encounter. In the Netherlands, very few Vueltas were ever sold; over the years, only a handful have surfaced—no more than one could count on a single hand. At the time, the roads were dominated by the Gazelle Champion Mondial. Not merely out of preference, but out of proximity: Gazelle dealers were everywhere, in every town and city, while Pinarello remained a rarity. Meanwhile, a quiet revolution was unfolding—aluminum was on the rise, and steel was gradually pushed aside, cherished mainly by purists and those reluctant to let go of what had long proven its worth. And yet, the steel of that era stood at its peak. Refined, resilient, almost indestructible. Names like Columbus, Reynolds, and Dedacciai became synonymous with innovation and craftsmanship; their alloys gave steel a renewed soul. In 1994, steel wrote its final chapter in the Tour de France. A Pinarello Dyna, built from Dedacciai 18MCDV6ht and welded by the legendary Dario Pegoretti, rode to victory. That same spirit lives on in this Vuelta. Where the Dyna and Radius express themselves through clean TIG welds, the Vuelta proudly carries its traditional lugs—an echo of another era. In 1997, it stood as the most expensive lugged frame in Pinarello’s lineup. But above all, it is a bicycle from a moment of transition—a quiet monument to steel, craftsmanship, and change.
